Learn the half-double crochet or half dc,stitch

This is the next in my series - Learning to crochet. The half double crochet or half dc stitch as it is sometimes known is again fairly simple. Like the single crochet stitch, you put the yarn over the hook, insert it into the bottom stitch and you should have 3 loops on your hook. Pull the yarn through the bottom stitch, and then put the yarn over the hook again and pull it through all three loops on the hook and this is your half dc stitch.

Practice this stitch. As with everything, practice is key. Once you have mastered all three stitches, the chain, the single crochet stitch and the half double crochet or dc stitch, come back again for the next lesson in this series.

Lesson 2, the single crochet stitch

This video is to teach the single crochet stitch. After your foundation chain row, turn your work. To begin your next row in single crochet, make a chain. Next put your hook into the second chain from your hook. Put your yarn over the hook and draw it through the chain, put the yarn over the hook again and draw it through both the loops on the hook and that is your new single crochet stitch.

With everything, practice is key. Master this stitch. An easy project would be a pot holder. Make a foundation row of 30 chain. I am using a 3.50 mm. crochet hook and acrylic 4 ply worsted weight yarn. Turn your work, make a chain to start your next row. Work another 29 single crochet stitches into the next 29 chain to the end. Turn. Repeat the single crochet stitch and work several rows, until you have a square piece of crocheted fabric. Count your stitches in each row to obtain a uniform piece. Later on, you will become expert enough to distinguish and recognize your stitches. For now, make sure you count each stitch. Cast of by breaking of the yarn and pulling the yarn through the last loop on the hook.

I have also showed you the symbols for the chain and single crochet stitch in this video. Draw a chart for the pot holder for yourself, and try using it while working on your fabric.
